McDonald’s announced in May that it was withdrawing from Russia because of the war in Ukraine. The Russian chain is preparing to reopen 15 restaurants this weekend, according to the Russian state news agency TASS, Sistema PBO, which operated the company that previously owned McDonald’s. A spokesman for PBO Systema told TASS: “The green background of the logo is the quality of the products and services that our customers are used to.”
Social media users have noticed that the new logo still looks like the letter “M”. Others say the new logo is inspired by the Bangladesh flag, with a dark green background and a red circle in a shade similar to the new logo.
According to Izvestia, Sistema PBO, the Russian state agency responsible for intellectual property rights, has proposed to Rospatent eight possible names for the new chain. Among the names considered are “free cashier”, ie “same”, “maximum Samy” and “box office available”.
McDonald’s, Sistema PBO and Rospatent did not immediately respond to the BBC’s request for comment. McDonald’s went out of business in Russia in March, less than two weeks after Russia invaded Ukraine.
