Naomi Kawase stated on her company’s website that the situation had been resolved internally after the news was broken by a Tokyo-based weekly magazine and scoop factory.

However, the magazine then reported on an incident in October 2015, in which Kawase allegedly attacked a staff member at her Nara City production firm, Kumie.
While other employees fled the office in panic, the award-winning director attacked a male colleague, knocking him to the ground and continuing to beat him.

The victim’s face was considerably swollen when the crew returned. The employee, who resigned immediately, acknowledged the incident to the source, but claimed he didn’t want to remark publicly about it.
This year has also seen a slew of allegations of sexual assault of actors by directors in Japan’s film industry.
Kawase’s Tokyo 2020 ‘Side A,’ the official film of last year’s Tokyo Summer Olympics, premiered in Japan on Friday to minimal fanfare, with the filmmaker making no public appearance and ticket sales being low. According to sources, it’s unclear if the issue surrounding Kawase has had an influence on audience excitement.
