China pays up to $15,000 to civilians, for national security tip-offs

In Beijing’s drive to enhance alertness about potential threats; rewards vary from material to “spiritual.” China is offering rewards of up to $15,000 for information on any national security breaches. The Ministry of State Security claimed via the state-run publication Legal Daily that while rewards for tip-offs on foreign spies have existed in China for years; the new rules aim to regulate the incentives nationally and encourage more civilians to uncover risks.

“The measures’ design is favourable to fully mobilising the general public’s excitement to support and help in national security work; widely rallying the people’s hearts, morale, wisdom, and strength,” the ministry stated. Instead of cash, non-monetary “spiritual” prizes in the form of certificates could be awarded.
