Gloucestershire won their third Vitality Blast game of the season, defeating Glamorgan by five wickets in Cardiff, thanks to an impressive performance with both bat and ball.
Glamorgan got off to a strong start in their batting innings, with an opening stand of 90 without loss between David Lloyd and Sam Northeast. Gloucestershire came back into the game after Glamorgan made 69 for eight in the final ten overs of their innings, setting a target of 159 to win.
Gloucestershire popped up to be on their way to victory until three wickets fell in the space of six balls, causing them to limp over the line in the end.

After being put into bat, Lloyd and Northeast’s partnership put the home team in command of the early part of the game. Lloyd was the main threat, scoring 68 off 43 balls, his highest T20 score since 2016.
Gloucestershire’s breakthrough came from the wily Benny Howell, who claimed the wickets of both batsmen in the space of 15 runs. These were the first of eight wickets to fall in the second half of Glamorgan’s innings as the visitors tried to claw their way back into the game. Howell’s variations and Tom Smith’s left-arm spin suffocated the Glamorgan middle order, with wickets falling on a regular basis.
After the openers were gone, no Glamorgan batter scored more than 20 runs, with next highest partnership being only 17 runs. David Payne recovered well in the death overs after being expensive in his first two overs, taking the wickets of James Weighell and the risky Dan Douthwaite.
Gloucestershire made an equally strong start to their innings, reaching 54 without loss at the finish of the Powerplay. Douthwaite’s introduction for the seventh over resulted in the first wicket, with Miles Hammond being caught on the boundary by Eddie Byrom.
Gloucestershire’s progress towards win was helped by a partnership between Bracey and Phillips, with Bracey reaching fifty off 40 balls. Phillips was content to be a bystander while he got his bearings, but he soon started to find the boundary with relative ease before being well caught at long on by Michael Hogan off the bowling of Douthwaite.
With Michael Neser out due to the positive Covid test, the Glamorgan attack battled with a damp ball, and two brief rain delays did not help them regain control of the Gloucestershire innings. The cluster of wickets near the end gave Glamorgan some hope, but Gloucestershire completed with in the 19th over of their chase, needing only eight runs from 14 balls.
