The US has nominated a new envoy to the Horn of Africa in an attempt to aid the peace process in Ethiopia.

Mike Hammer served as the United States ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo before.

Mr. Hammer’s nomination, according to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, demonstrates America’s commitment to Ethiopia’s peace, security, and development.

The Ethiopian government started an offensive in the Tigray area in November 2020, sparking a conflict that has displaced over two million people.

Ethiopia, a long-time US ally, declared an indefinite humanitarian cease-fire in March, allowing some relief delivery and reducing worries of hunger.
