China, Pacific island agree to five-point consensus

China and Pacific island countries achieved a five-point agreement at their second foreign ministers’ meeting on Monday, according to visiting Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

Wang claimed the meeting was a success and created consensus in five areas during a joint news conference with Fijian Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Voreqe Bainimarama, who also co-chaired the meeting.

He stated that China and the Pacific island countries have decided to strengthen their comprehensive strategic relationship, protect sovereignty, independence, and national dignity, pursue joint development and prosperity, support real multilateralism, and foster people-to-people understanding.

Foreign ministers from China, Fiji, Kiribati, Samoa, Niue, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Micronesia, Solomon Islands, and Tonga, as well as the secretary general of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) online and offline, attended the conference.
