Gervonta Davis defends his WBA (Regular) lightweight title against Rolando Romero on May 28. The two will finally meet in New York’s Barclays Center.
Davis began his professional career in 2013. Davis won the IBF super-featherweight title in 2017 but lost it the following year after failing to meet the weight requirements for a match against Francisco Fonseca. Davis won the WBA (Super) super-featherweight title in 2018 and then defeated Yuriorkis Gamboa to win the WBA (Regular) lightweight title in 2019.
Davis won the WBA (Super) super-featherweight title by knockout over Leo Santa Cruz in October 2020. Davis won the WBA (Regular) super-lightweight championship by defeating Mario Barrios in a rematch. In December, he retained the WBA (Regular) lightweight title by defeating Isaac Cruz.
Romero made his pro debut in 2016. He won the interim WBA lightweight title in August 2020 against Jackson Marinez. In his last bout in July, Romero faced Anthony Yigit. The interim title was not on the line because Yigit missed weight. Romero beat him in the seventh round via TKO.
The bout was slated to take place on Dec. 5, but Romero had to withdraw due to sexual assault charges against him. After a few weeks, no charges were brought, and the fight was rescheduled. Davis has a legal past, including an arrest in February 2020 on accusations of simple battery/domestic assault against his former partner.
Gervonta Davis vs. Rolando Romero is available on Showtime pay-per-view. Showtime is available to stream on Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, Apple TV, Roku, Xbox One, laptops, and mobile and tablet devices.
