Oklahoma’s governor passes the nation’s strongest abortion ban into law

Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt signed the nation’s strongest abortion ban into law on Wednesday, banning abortions after conception and allowing ordinary individuals to sue those who assist women in terminating their pregnancies.

“As governor, I promised Oklahomans that I would sign every pro-life bill that came across my desk, and I am glad to uphold that commitment today,” Stitt said in a statement, according to Oklahoma media.

Only medical emergencies, rape, or incest are exempted under the Republican-backed measure, which took effect immediately after Stitt’s signature. It states that contraception and emergency contraception are not prohibited.

The restriction will be challenged in state court, according to the Center for Reproductive Rights, a global advocacy organization located in New York.

Oklahoma is one of the Republican-led states rushing to adopt anti-abortion legislation this year, expecting the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade, the 1973 case that established the constitutional right to abortion.

The court’s conservative majority aims to reform federal abortion rights and throw the matter back to individual states, according to a draught judgement released on May 2.

In preparation of the ban, Oklahoma’s four abortion facilities have already stopped performing abortions.

Oklahoma passed another bill in May prohibiting abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, rather than fertilizations. It, like the most recent measure, is enforced by civil litigation.

Both measures include an enforcement clause modelled after Texas legislation that went into effect in September and prohibited clinics from performing nearly all abortions in that state.
