Johnny Depp feels he played a hand in Amber Heard’s casting in Aquaman. When his team asked him to testify in his ongoing defamation trial against his ex-wife, the actor, 58, returned to the stand on Wednesday.

Depp had the chance to respond to some of the arguments brought during Heard’s defence during the last week of testimony, including her claim that he did not secure her blockbuster Aquaman role for her.

Heard’s accusation was met with a “not exactly true” response from Depp. “She asked me if I’d talk to [Warner Bros.],” Depp testified, when Heard auditioned for the comic-book film. “I called three upper-echelon Warner Bros. executives… and told them—,” Depp said before an objection was upheld. “I can only say that she got the part in the movie. I think I alleviated some of their concerns.”

Depp’s attorney Camille Vasquez questioned Heard during her cross-examination, asking if it was true that Depp recruited her for Aquaman. According to PEOPLE, Heard answered by stating, “Please excuse me. No, Ms. Vasquez, I auditioned for that part and got it. This is how it works.”

Aquaman was a box office hit when it was released in December 2018, the same month as Heard’s op-ed in the Washington Post. Heard testified that she “fought hard” to be able to return for the sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which is now in production and will be released in March 2023. Because of the negative news surrounding the Depp affair, she and her agency said her role was “dramatically reduced” this time.

Depp’s legal team, on the other hand, had DC Films President Walter Hamada testify that her role as Mera in the sequel was never meant to be significant, and that it is instead a “buddy comedy” starring Jason Momoa and Patrick Wilson.
