The bond between Charlie van Straubenzee and Price Harry extends back to their schooldays.
In recent days, it appears like Prince Harry has been reconnecting with his boyhood origins. The Duke of Sussex took part in a match for the Santa Barbara Polo and Racquet Club last week, while his finely dressed wife, the Duchess of Sussex, cheered him on. The prince put on his boots and leather knee pads and proceeded to the field with Nacho Figueras, a long-time buddy who wrote earlier this month on Instagram that he was ‘thrilled to be riding with’ Harry.

The prince is now spending quality time with his boyhood pal, Charlie van Straubenzee, in what looks to be another reconciliation with his past. The two were photographed riding e-bikes through the streets of California yesterday. The males appeared relaxed and joyful as they skirted about Montecito’s street corners, dressed virtually similarly in shorts, trainers, light jackets, and dark shades.
Van Straubenzee’s visit is believed to be the first time a childhood buddy has been photographed with Harry since he relocated to the United States in 2020. Princess Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank, Harry’s first family guests, visited the Duke and Duchess of Sussex at their Californian home earlier this year. After an extended period apart, the royal cousins were photographed laughing together at the Super Bowl, and were joined by their partners for dinner in Santa Barbara a few days later.
Since their prep school years, Van Straubenzee has been not merely a friend but also one of the royal’s closest confidantes. After meeting at Ludgrove School, they went their own ways to Eton and Harrow, respectively. Despite their different secondary schools and subsequent routes (Harry attended the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, while Van Straubenzee attended Newcastle University), the buddies remained in touch.
Van Straubenzee was an usher at the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s wedding in 2018, months before Prince Harry’s wedding to Daisy Jenks, when he served as best man. Archie, Harry’s eldest child, is godfather to the investment banker.
Prior to marriage and children, Harry and Van Straubenzee were frequently photographed cheering on England at rugby events or laughing together on the sidelines of polo matches.
