This year’s Tony Awards will celebrate Angela Lansbury for her decades-long career.
The 96-year-old actress, who made her Broadway debut almost 60 years ago, will be honoured with a lifetime achievement award at the 75th Annual Tony Awards on June 12.
“Legendary actress and five-time #TonyAwards winner Angela Lansbury will receive the 2022 Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre!” the Tony Awards announced Monday.
Lansbury is well-known for her appearances in cinema and television (particularly Murder, She Wrote) as well as on stage, winning four Tony Awards between her roles as Mame Dennis in Mame in 1966 and Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street in 1979.
She went on to win a fifth Tony for Blithe Spirit in 2009, her first Tony for a play rather than a musical.
The 2022 Tony Awards will be broadcast live from New York City’s renowned Radio City Music Hall on June 12 at 8 p.m. ET. Both CBS and Paramount+ will carry it live.
Starting at 7 p.m. ET, a special hour-long celebration will be shown on Paramount+.
The annual Antoinette Perry Awards for Excellence in Theatre (the Tonys) are presented by the Broadway League and the American Theater Wing and commemorate the greatest accolade in American theatre – the equivalent of the Emmys in television, the Grammys in music, and the Oscars in cinema. It’s a requirement for the EGOT, the grand slam of show business.
