Teenage gunman kills 18 children at Texas elementary school

UVALDE, Texas – A teen gunman opened fire in a south Texas elementary school on Tuesday, killing at least 18 children and one adult before being shot himself, according to officials. It was the latest mass murder in a country ravaged by gun violence.

Governor Greg Abbott said the suspect, Salvador Ramos, was probably slain by police officers arriving to the area, and that two officers were shot, though their injuries were not significant, according to the governor.

The suspect, according to authorities, acted alone.

The death toll was reported to be 18 children and two adults, including the shooter, until the state attorney general’s office issued an official statement putting the death toll at 18 children and two adults, including the shooter. According to the grades of the kids registered at the school, the children were between the ages of 7 and 10.

The reason for the massacre was unknown at the time.
The atrocity occurred barely ten days after ten people were killed in a predominately Black neighbourhood in Buffalo, New York. Authorities have charged an 18-year-old guy with travelling hundreds of miles to Buffalo and shooting at a grocery shop with an assault-style rifle.

Official information regarding the late-morning incident remained scarce.

According to Abbott, the suspect abandoned his car and entered the school armed with a handgun and maybe a rifle before opening fire.

Sergeant Erick Estrada of the Texas Public Safety Department told CNN that officers spotted the suspect emerge from a car he crashed near the school, holding a weapon and a backpack, and “engaged” with him before he entered the school’s south side and began firing. The gunman, according to Estrada, was wearing body armour.

According to CBS News, Ramos shot and killed his grandmother before going to school, according to unnamed law enforcement sources.

“The individual is said to have shot his grandma just before entering the school,” Abbott told reporters. “I

On Twitter, University Hospital in San Antonio stated it had received two patients from the Uvalde incident, a 66-year-old woman and a 10-year-old girl, both in critical condition.

The White House said US President Joe Biden planned to address the nation about the massacre on Tuesday evening, after ordering flags to be flown at half-staff until sunset daily until May 28 in honour of the tragedy.

According to Pete Arredondo, chief of the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District Police Department, who also spoke to media, the students at the Texas school are in the second, third, and fourth grades.

The Texas shooting is the latest in a string of mass shootings in US schools that have shocked the globe and sparked a passionate debate between proponents of stricter gun laws and opponents of any action that may jeopardise Americans’ constitutional right to bear arms.

The massacre in Texas was one of the deadliest at a US school since a gunman opened fire at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut in December 2012, killing 26 people, including 20 children. In 2018, a former student at Parkland, Florida’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School killed 17 students and staff.

According to a University of Michigan study, firearms become the greatest cause of death for US children and adolescents in 2020,

The atrocities of the day were documented on Robb Elementary School’s Facebook page.

Its posts earlier this week featured the normal student activities, such as a second-grade trip to the zoo and a save-the-date for a gifted-and-talented presentation. However, at 11:43 a.m. on Tuesday, a note was posted. “Please be advised that Robb Elementary is currently on lockdown due to gunfire in the area. The students and employees in the building are safe.”

A subsequent post was more specific: “At Robb Elementary, there is an active shooter. On-site law enforcement is present.” Parents were requested to leave the premises. Finally, a notice was put informing parents that they might meet their children at the civic centre of the little town.
