Anthony Albanese implies a shift in climate policy

Australia’s next leader has promised to change the country’s course, including a major shift in climate policy.

Anthony Albanese, the opposition centre-left Labor Party’s election winner on Saturday, predicted that Australia could become a renewable energy superpower.

On Monday, he will take office as Prime Minister; although it is unclear whether his party will have a majority in parliament.

After three years of record-breaking bushfires and floods, Australians were concerned about climate change.
After conceding, outgoing Prime Minister Scott Morrison, the head of an outgoing Liberal-National government, acknowledged the “wonder of the Australian people.”

The tally of votes is still being tallied and he is still a few seats short; of the 76 members Labor needed to win a majority in the 151-member lower chamber.

Electoral officials have only begun tallying over three million postal votes, so final results may not be known for several days.
