Russia may allow over age of 40 to join military

In an indication of Russia’s pressing need to reinforce its war effort in Ukraine, the Russian parliament said on Friday that it would adopt a law that would enable Russians over 40 and foreigners over 30 to join the military.

According to the State Duma’s website, the measure will allow the military to make use of the expertise of senior specialists.

“For the use of high-precision weapons, the operation of weapons and military equipment, highly professional specialists are needed. Experience shows that they become such by the age of 40-45,” it added.

Only Russians and foreigners aged 18-30 could formerly sign a first contract with the military.

In the 86-day-old battle, Russia has suffered massive reverses and severe casualties of personnel and equipment, prompting Western military analysts to suggest it urgently needs to mobilise additional troops.

The planned effort, according to the Duma, would make it easier to recruit civilian physicians, engineers, and operations and communications professionals.
