A Florida gas station fire was started by a deputy’s Taser during a motorcycle arrest.

A shocking video shows a large gas station fire that Florida state investigators claim was started by a deputy’s Taser being used to apprehend a motorbike driver.

Orlando got surveillance video of the February incident at an Osceola County Wawa gas station. A massive fireball is seen erupting from a petrol pump on video, and at least one man covered in flames is seen sliding across the ground. One automobile at the station drives out of the parking lot to avoid the fire.

According to the state fire marshal’s findings, the most likely cause of the fire was an electric discharge from the deputy’s use of a department-issued Taser weapon, and the fire was started accidentally. According to his lawyers, Mark NeJame and Albert Yonfa, the motorbike driver, 26-year-old John Beretta, sustained third-degree burns to 75% of his body and remains hospitalized months later.

Beretta is not expected to survive his injuries, according to a report issued Wednesday by Florida’s Division of Investigative and Forensic Services. NeJame, who also represents suspects in a separate recent Kissimmee, Florida, deputy-involved shooting in a Target parking lot, claimed the motorcycle driver was a “nice young man” who worked for FedEx and that police attempted to arrest the incorrect individual.

According to the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, authorities received reports of persons on motorbikes brandishing firearms at other vehicles in February, leading a pursuit that ended at the gas station. Beretta’s attorney, however, claimed that his client never brandished a pistol and that officers rushed him, toppling his bike down and spilling gas on the ground, which was then ignited by the Taser.

The lawyer has requested that the Florida Department of Law Enforcement conduct an independent investigation. According to authorities, three deputies were injured in the incident, two with minor injuries and one with third-degree burns who is still hospitalized.
