Pace bowlers could have done a better job: Mominul

Bangladesh Test captain Mominul Haque stated his squad will take confidence from the first drew Test and put in a comprehensive team effort in the series-clinching second game in Dhaka.

Bangladesh drew the Test against Sri Lanka, but more importantly, they were able to move on from their poor showing in South Africa.

To lead Bangladesh’s batting squad, Tamim Iqbal and Mushfiqur Rahim each struck hundreds, while Liton Kumar Das and Mahmudul Hasan Joy each got half-centuries.

In his comeback game, Nayeem Hasan took six wickets in the first innings, but Shakib al Hasan, who was recovering from a bout of COVID, was at his best throughout the game, exhibiting no signs of weariness or discomfort.

Mominul stated after the first Test in Chattogram on Thursday, “I think this Test draw will benefit us in Dhaka”.

“Everybody is in the running, and we played as a team, whether it was the batsmen or the bowlers, and when we play as a team, we always get excellent results.”

“When we put up a joint effort, we are always in a favorable position,” he added.

Mominul expressed his disappointment that the pace bowling unit did not perform well, picking up only one wicket.

“I believe the pace bowlers might have bowled better in the first innings because we have high expectations from them,” Mominul remarked.

“Shoriful wasn’t there in the first innings, but I would have been happy if Khaled had bowled better lengths because that would have been nice,” he added, adding that he was impressed with the spinners’ performance, particularly Shakib.

“I believe it was difficult for spinners to get wickets on this surface, thus I thought Nayeem and Shakib bhai’s contributions were crucial.”

“In the first innings, runs came thick and quick, and Shakib bhai and Taijul held it together (slowed it down).”

“Shakib bhai’s first-inning performance was excellent, and his second-inning performance was also excellent.”

“The wickets in Dhaka and Mirpur are different, and it’s not that I couldn’t use bowlers here (on this flat pitch), because I believe you can always use your bowlers provided they understand and can execute your plan.”

“You must adjust to every situation in which you play, and this is entirely mental. The spin is a little late here, but the ball turns swiftly in Dhaka and will come into the wicket.”

“I believe everyone will be able to acclimate to Chattogram,” he stated.
