Stephen Curry led the Golden State Warriors with 21 points in their Western Conference finals opener against the Dallas Mavericks, 112-87.
Warriors held Dallas star Luka Doncic to only 20 points, his lowest total in the playoffs.
Curry, who also grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds, added, “We did what we were expected to do – protect home court, win the first game.”
“We had a precise game plan coming in, and we largely followed it.”
Andrew Wiggins led the Warriors with 19 points and was instrumental in reducing Doncic’s influence.
“‘Wiggs’ was incredible. Doncic is one of the toughest players to cover in the NBA “Warriors coach Steve Kerr stated.
“We simply requested Wiggs to pursue him, stay in front of him, and apply pressure. He did an outstanding job.”
Doncic scored 29 points per game in the playoff series against the Utah Jazz and 32.6 points per game in the semi-final series against the Phoenix Suns.
Warriors, according to Doncic, “did a fantastic job.”
“Of course, we could improve things. We got a lot of positive feedback throughout the first quarter. Also in the second quarter. The second half, though, was different.”
Warriors will host the second game of the best-of-seven series on Friday when they will be back at home in San Francisco.
Miami Heat are up 1-0 in the Eastern Conference final against the Boston Celtics and will play their second game on Thursday.
