Hindu organisations have filed new applications to prevent Muslims from visiting an ancient Indian mosque

Lawyers claimed on Wednesday that members of hardline Hindu organizations filed applications in a court in northern India to prevent Muslims from accessing a historic mosque until the court rules on an earlier request asking permission to search the site for any Hindu treasures.

The fresh applications were granted by a local court in Mathura, a Hindu religious town in Uttar Pradesh (UP) state, although proceedings in the 2020 lawsuit aimed at obtaining permission to film and survey inside the 17th century Shahi Eidgah mosque have yet to begin.

“We suspect that Hindu symbols could be removed inside Shahi Eidgah mosque so we want the court to suspend entry of Muslims,” said Mahendra Pratap, a lawyer involved in the case.

Another municipal court in the state authorized a crew to investigate and film inside one of the most significant mosques in Varanasi, an old city that is also Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s electoral constituency.

The country’s top court overruled a Varanasi court’s decision to prohibit big Muslim prayer gatherings in the Gyanvapsi mosque on Tuesday, but let the local court proceed with its case.

Members of Modi’s extreme Hindu organizations think that Islamic invaders destroyed Hindu temples during their 200-year reign.
