Baltimore pitcher Harvey handed 60-game suspension for drug dealing

Matt Harvey of the Baltimore Orioles has been punished for 60 games after admitting to supplying narcotics to Tyler Skaggs of the Los Angeles Angels, who later died.

The ban was announced as part of an investigation into Skaggs’ death by Major League Baseball.

In February, Harvey testified that former Angels employee Eric Kay gave oxycodone to Skaggs.

Kay was found guilty of narcotics distribution and faces up to 20 years in jail.

Skaggs died in a Texas hotel room in July 2019 at the age of 27 while the club was staying there ahead of a four-game series against the Texas Rangers.

He choked on his vomit while under the influence of fentanyl, oxycodone, and alcohol, according to a coroner’s report.

Kay, the Angels’ former head of communications, was found to have distributed a controlled narcotic that resulted in death by the court.

He was also found guilty of conspiring to possess controlled narcotics with the intent to distribute them, and he will be sentenced in June.

Harvey testified in exchange for immunity, claiming that he obtained tablets from Kay and then divided the oxycodone with Skaggs. Harvey also admitted to using cocaine in the past throughout his trial.

Harvey was suspended without pay by the MLB commissioner’s office for breaching the league’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

Harvey might be eligible for selection as early as July 8 due to the suspension being backdated from April 29.
