NATO expansion will increase tensions in Europe

According to Stanislav Zas, secretary general of the Russian-led Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), NATO expansion will exacerbate tensions in Europe.

Mr. Zas, speaking following a CSTO session in Moscow, said the alliance was now facing problems from increased militarization in Eastern Europe.

His remarks follow confirmations from Sweden and Finland that they will both apply to join the Atlantic military alliance.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg has stated that the membership process for Finland and Sweden might be completed quickly, despite Turkey’s reservations.
