Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has predicted that the Senate will vote on over $40 billion in new aid to Ukraine on Monday, with a final vote on Wednesday, May 18. The Washington Post reports on this.
In a call with reporters from Stockholm on Sunday, McConnell said, “I think it’s vital for the United States to help, important for the free world to help.”
When challenged about Republican reservations about spending in Ukraine, he stated that this was not charity.
The senator said “It’s important to point out to our colleagues and the American people that it’s in our interest to do this. This is not charity. [..] This is not some handout. This is about a ruthless thug beginning a march through Europe,”
According to McConnell, the US should designate Russia as a state supporter of terrorism. He also referred to Finland and Sweden’s projected formal NATO membership applications as “one of the positive outcomes of this invasion.”
According to him, supplying Ukraine with US missile systems, tanks, and other weapons is still “under discussion.” He stated that the Ukrainians will choose the conditions of the cease-fire.
“Victory is defined as whatever Zelensky and the Ukrainians deem acceptable. President Zelensky wants their country back, thus the goal is territorial integrity “According to McConnell.
