Regime-change: President Alvi seeks formation of a judicial commission, writes to CJP

President of Pakistan Arif Alvi on Thursday wrote a letter to the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) to probe into the regime change conspiracy through formation of a judicial commission.

In the letter, the president urged CJP to preside over the commission himself. He emphasised the need to save the country from the political and economic crisis as well as the deterioration of the situation.

He said that a serious political crisis is impending in the country and polarisation is increasing in the light of recent events.

The president added that every institution must make extra efforts to protect the country from further damage and turmoil.

He said in the letter that it is unfortunate that the comments are being taken out of context, misunderstandings are brewing, opportunities are being wasted, confusion is running rife and the economy is in crisis.

The president reminded the Supreme Court (SC), in the past, constituted judicial commissions on issues of national security, integrity, sovereignty, and public interest.

He provided examples of the judicial commission to probe into alleged rigging in 2013 elections apart from commissions for investigating the Memogate scandal and missing persons.

Arif Alvi noted that Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif has also expressed the desire for the formation of a commission for probing into the alleged regime-change conspiracy.

He said the nation respects the Supreme Court and hopes that it would meet its expectations, adding that the commission should probe into the matter not on technical grounds but in the true spirit of justice.

The president further said in the letter that it will be a great service to the country, adding that the nation deserves clarification on the issue of national importance.

He pointed out that there are countless examples in the world history of conspiracies to change the government.

He was of the view that the evidence-based recorded circumstances could lead to conclusions.
