Govt, President rigid on matter of provincial governors

ISLAMABAD: The matter of appointment of the provincial governors in the country remained indecipherable as the tension stays high between President Dr Arif Alvi and the federal government.

As per details, the slots of governor in all four provinces remained unoccupied and the political temperature has seen a rise in the country.

Despite the advice of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the President has not yet rubber-stamped the appointment of Nasreen Jalil of Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) as Governor Sindh.

In the case of Balochistan, the appointment of Wali Khan Kakar as the governor of the province was not issued.

Whereas, the slot of Governor Punjab fell vacant as the federal government removed Omar Safrfraz Cheema from his office and nominated Baligh-ur-Rehman for the post.

The crisis in the province intensified as Punjab Assembly Speaker Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, who was to take charge as acting governor until the oath of Rehman, refused to take over.

On the other hand, in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), no nomination has been made so far for the slot.

Apart from Punjab, the Speakers of Provincial Assemblies in three provinces are acting as Governors.

With the exception of Punjab, the other provincial governors resigned after the election of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Shehbaz Sharif as Prime Minister of Pakistan.

In Punjab, the former governor Chaudhary Muhammad Sarwar was removed from the post by his own party PTI.
