DIY SOS: Nick Knowles absence from Children In Need special

Nick Knowles was back on DIY SOS on Tuesday, May 10 when the show returns for its 32nd season, but that wasn’t always the case. During the 2021 Children in Need special, he was replaced by Welshman Rhod Gilbert, who was a notable absence from the iconic BBC show. Why, though?

Knowles was charged with breaking the BBC’s rigorous advertising regulations by starring in a Shreddies cereal ad campaign. Nick played a fictionalized version of himself in the advertisements, a builder who spilled Shreddies on himself. Nick was forced to withdraw from hosting a Children in Need episode of DIY SOS due to his presence.

Following conversations with Nick, the BBC revealed that they had “settled the difficulties” and that he will definitely return for the 2022 series, just a week after he announced his departure from DIY SOS.

The crew will travel throughout the country alongside some incredible volunteers, tradespeople, and local suppliers to create life-changing renovations that will better the lives of those who need it most.

The DIY SOS team travels across the country from north of Newcastle to Bristol and beyond in six episodes.

Nick said, “I’m so excited we are bringing a series of brand new episodes to air which were filmed before, during and after the pandemic. You can expect the usual camaraderie with lots of emotion and laughter. So many people turned out to help communities and families in need despite their own challenges and suppliers have been so generous – It’s been really life affirming.”

He added, “DIY SOS has always been about helping each other which for me was also the story of lockdown, so this is a celebration of people’s fortitude and generosity. We live in a hugely generous society and it’s good to be reminded of that in amongst all the bad news we’ve all had to endure.”
