Three, the UK’s largest mobile network, has announced that it will phase out its remaining 3G services by the end of 2024 in order to focus completely on 4G and 5G.
It believes that this will free up resources to boost 4G connection and increase its 5G network’s coverage.
It’s a noteworthy milestone because Three was the first UK operator to launch a 3G service, hence the name. It is not thought to be considering changing its name.
“3G kickstarted the mobile revolution and launched Three into the UK 20 years ago. But the future is undoubtedly 5G,” said the brand’s CTO, David Hennessey.
“As we continue to roll out our ultrafast connectivity, by not only upgrading our existing 4G sites but building new 5G sites, we’ll be in a position to switch off our use of 3G across our network by the end of 2024.”
Three presently covers 98 percent of UK with its 3G and 4G services. However, in the United Kingdom, 5G has already surpassed 3G. According to the service, the number of 5G devices connected to its network has doubled in recent months.
By the end of this year, it is expected that 5G would account for 35% of all data traffic on the network.
