US think tank: Ukraine’s’ successful’ counteroffensive in Kharkiv might put Ukraine closer to Russia’s border

According to a US research group, Ukrainian forces are successfully conducting a counteroffensive in Kharkiv and could soon push Russian troops back to Russia’s border.

According to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), a Washington, D.C.-based organization, Russian forces are retiring from the northeast Kharkiv area and have destroyed many bridges in an effort to mitigate the “successful Ukrainian onslaught.”

“Armies generally destroy bridges only if they have largely decided not to attempt to cross the river in the opposite direction any time soon,” the report stated. “Russian forces are thus unlikely to launch operations to retake the northeast outskirts of Kharkiv liberated by Ukrainian forces in the near future.”

According to the article, Ukraine’s military victory in Kharkiv could push Russia’s forces to modify their strategy, preventing reinforcements presently needed in Kharkiv from giving support in other areas.
