Washington:
According to US Central Intelligence Agency Director William Burns, Beijing is closely observing Russia’s conflict in Ukraine, which is influencing China’s calculations on Taiwan.
Burns, speaking at a Financial Times event in Washington, said the Chinese government leadership has been struck by Ukraine’s staunch opposition to Russia’s invasion, as well as the economic price Russia is incurring. “These are things that they’re weighing very carefully,” Burns said.
However, he emphasized that it would not change China’s long-term objectives.
“I don’t for a minute think that this has eroded Beijing’s determination overtime to gain control over Taiwan,” said Burns. “But I think it’s something that’s affecting their calculation about how and when they go about doing that.”
