Following an investigation into his alleged unethical behavior, Fred Savage was fired as director and executive producer of “The Wonder Years.”
In a statement on Friday, a spokeswoman for 20th Television confirmed the news. Statement was,
“Recently, we were made aware of allegations of inappropriate conduct by Fred Savage, and as is policy, an investigation was launched,”
“Upon its completion, the decision was made to terminate his employment as an executive producer and director of The Wonder Years.”
“The Wonders Years” has yet to receive a second season renewal.
From 1988 until 1993, Savage played the precocious Kevin Arnold growing up in the late 1960s and early 1970s suburbia in the original “Wonder Years.” Last year, he was named director and executive producer of ABC’s relaunch of the show, which debuted last year. The new series, produced by Lee Daniels (“Empire”) and Saladin K. Patterson (“Psych”), preserves the nostalgia and melancholy tone of the original while focusing on a prosperous, middle-class Black family in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1968.
This isn’t the first time Savage has been accused of misbehaviour. In 2018, a former staff member of the Fox comedy series “The Grinder,” which starred Savage and Rob Lowe, accused Savage of assault and intimidation, which he denied. The series’ producer, 20th Century Fox Television, pushed back as well, claiming that an inquiry uncovered no misconduct.
Youngjoo Hwang, a costume designer for the show, accused the actor/director of abuse, assault, gender discrimination, and harassment.
