In the Multiverse of Madness, Benedict Cumberbatch compliments Doctor Strange for allowing him to explore so many different aspects of Stephen Strange.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness actor Benedict Cumberbatch loved the opportunity to play numerous versions of Stephen Strange in the film.
Cumberbatch expressed his gratitude for having the main Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Stephen Strange encounter numerous versions of himself at a press conference attended by CBR. Cumberbatch believed that everyone has numerous personalities inside their heads, and the Doctor Strange sequel brought this idea to life on the big screen. Cumberbatch compared the acting challenge to self-therapy since he was able to delve into numerous moralities and mentalities for Strange.
“This multiversal narrative structure or idea is like it is in our own lives,” Cumberbatch observed. “We play multiple roles. We have an incredible capacity and imaginative space in our subconscious to imagine ourselves into different circumstances in our dreamscape, and I feel that this is an extrapolation of that in the sense that he’s meeting other versions who are essentially him, but they’ve made different choices in different circumstances with different outcomes. So, it’s a great fuel from a very odd spectacular self-therapy.”
From a scary Stephen Strange to an undead vision of the Sorcerer Supreme, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has it all. Cumberbatch collaborated with director Sam Raimi to figure out which of the many variations for the same foundation character worked best for the entire film. As he investigated the multiverse’s possibilities, Cumberbatch found the process of calibrating tone and attitudes among his various depictions of Strange to be both enjoyable and complicated.
“Conversations [I had in the film], not just with me as an actor with my character but with the character and other versions of the character,” Cumberbatch continued, “[were] just a lot of fun as well to sort of shift up the look, to shift the attitude or the mannerisms or the abilities and show the same but different. It’s a fine balance, and we pushed it on some levels and less so on others, and [we benefited from] the finessing skill that Sam has to hold all this complexity and go with what makes most sense for our hero, for the story.”
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, directed by Sam Raimi, hits theatres on May 6.
