Germany’s reliance on Russian energy supplies has greatly decreased, according to German President Frank Walter Steinmeier during a visit to Bucharest on Wednesday.
Steinmeier, speaking at a joint press conference with his Romanian counterpart, Klaus Iohannis, stated that Germany is currently 15% dependent on Russian oil.
The Romanian president stated that his nation supports the European Commission’s planned embargo on Russian oil, which would be phased in over a six-month period.
Bucharest authorities are currently working on long-term solutions that can be implemented quickly, according to Iohannis.
“Romania wants to play an active role in achieving the EU’s strategic objectives for diversifying its natural gas supply,” he stated.
The two leaders also discussed the assistance provided to Ukraine and Ukrainian refugees, support for the Republic of Moldova, Ukraine, and Georgia’s EU entrance, and Romania’s expectations for Schengen membership.
