Performing with snakes takes the life of a snake handler in a show

Texas — A snake controller kicked the bucket after he was stung by a snake at the Rattlesnake Roundup in Texas on Saturday.

Eugene De Leon Sr., 60, of the Snake Busters Snake Handlers in Freer, around 100 miles north of San Antonio, was stung by a rattlesnake while performing at the yearly show Saturday evening. The nibble came four years after his child, Eugene De Leon, was chomped by a two-foot-long rattler within his left thumb.

De Leon was a veteran snake controller, yet an individual from the Freer Volunteer Fire Department and an overseer for Freer High School, as indicated by his eulogy.

“The affection and commitment he showed for his local area were seen consistently from being an individual from the Freer Vol. A local group of fire-fighters to being a summon for neighborhood inhabitants to help with eliminating snakes from their property,” the Freer Chamber of Commerce said. “He was generally prepared to help. We will always remember his fervor during Roundup time, from doing interviews with TV channels to showing up on broadcast Wildlife shows, he did everything.”

De Leon was taken to a Corpus Christi medical clinic, where he later passed on from his wounds.

De Leon’s sister, Monica Dimas, took to Facebook on Sunday to fund-raise for her sibling’s memorial service costs.

“I ask that you keep my mother, Evalina Morgan, and family in petition as my sibling has acquired his wings today doing what he adored doing,” Dimas said. “He had an energy for snake taking care of at the Rattlesnake Roundup in Freer…after numerous long periods of dealing with these things today was not your day with them… Find happiness in the hereafter my sibling.”
