Hayley Williams said, “Some people are wanting to go back to what felt, with hindsight, like a simpler time”
Williams joined Billie Eilish onstage at Coachella earlier this month to play Paramore’s 2006 track ‘Misery Business,’ and Avril Lavigne performed her 2002 breakthrough single ‘Complicated’ with Olivia Rodrigo.
Machine Gun Kelly, Kennyhoopla, Meet Me @ The Altar, and Willow, among others, have drawn inspiration from the burgeoning guitar-driven pop-punk genre of the noughties. In October, Paramore will headline all three dates of the When We Were Young Festival, which will also feature My Chemical Romance, Bring Me The Horizon, The Used, Taking Back Sunday, and others.
While speaking about the revival in interview, Hayley Williams said, it’s because “there’s so much frustration in the air right now and I think some people are wanting to go back to what felt, with hindsight, like a simpler time.”
Later she told, “We were able to put in so much raw energy and youth in a time capsule that younger musicians are tapping into.”
It comes as Hayley Williams debuts ‘Everything Is Emo,’ a new 20-part radio show.
“Not long ago, people started calling me a’veteran’ of my scene and the music industry,” Williams said of how the initiative came about. It makes me laugh because I still consider myself a fan most of the time.
“The serious truth is I have, in fact, grown up in this scene for the last two decades. I guess that’s a pretty long time. I’m really excited to have the opportunity to publicly nerd out about bands and songs that make my favorite subgenre feel like home to me. And while it will be fun to take some trips down memory lane, I’m just as excited, if not more, to play music from new artists I’m discovering all the time.”
Hayley Williams indicated that Paramore might make a comeback in 2022 in November of last year. ‘After Laughter,’ the group’s most recent studio album, was released in 2017.
She went on to claim that their sixth album would place “more focus on the guitar,” but that it would not be a “comeback emo record.”
She added, “I’m always waiting for the moment for us to know we’re onto something new and we’re not just rehashing the same shit.”
