LAHORE: Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf (PTI) leader Shahbaz Gill on Saturday said since Usman Buzdar’s resignation was not according to the instructions inscribed in the constitution, therefore it was not accepted.
“It is clearly written in the constitution that the resignation of the chief minister will be handwritten and will be in the name of the governor. Usman Bazdar’s resignation was neither handwritten nor addressed to the governor,” Shahbaz Gill said in a tweet.
He said Punjab Governor Omar Sarfaraz Cheema sought a formal legal opinion from the Advocate General of Punjab on the issue and in the light of that he suspended the unconstitutional measure.

The Punjab governor on Saturday rejected Usman Buzdar’s resignation and reinstated him and his cabinet after highlighting constitutional concerns.

The development came just hours after the Lahore High Court (LHC) issued an order instructing National Assembly Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf to administer the oath to Hamza Shahbaz at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.
Cheema rejected the resignation, claiming that it violated Article 130, Section 8, of the Constitution.
On the other hand, Omar Sarfraz Cheema tweeted, “Am I a slave that you will harass, bully, and carry violence in the assembly and I will administer you oath? Absolutely not.”
According to the governor’s letter to Punjab Assembly Speaker Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi, Buzdar sent his resignation to former Prime Minister Imran Khan, rather than the governor, as required by the constitution.
The Governor stated in his letter, “As per the mentioned provision of the Constitution, a Chief Minister’s resignation must meet the following requirements in order to be valid: (a) the Chief Minister must address a handwritten letter of resignation; (b) it must be addressed to the Governor i.i Punjab, and (c) the effect of the resignation must be a resignation from his office.”
Buzdar had, on March 28, resigned when the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) opted to back Pakistan Muslim League-Q leader Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi for the slot of chief minister. Former Punjab governor Chaudhry Sarwar had accepted Buzdar’s resignation on April 1.
