Ruud awakening as Van de Zandschulp reaches Munich semis

Casper Ruud of the Netherlands was the latest seed to exit the ATP tournament in Munich on Friday, losing in straight sets to Botic van de Zandschulp of the Netherlands in the quarter-finals.

After a tense first set on clay, the eighth-seeded Van de Zandschulp eased past Norway’s Ruud 7-5, 6-1 to go to the semi-finals on Saturday.

“Maybe the score is easier than it really was,” said van de Zandschulp, who will face Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic in the last four.

“The first set was really tight, the second set was a little bit easier, but I think I played really well.”

After Germany’s Olympic champion Alexander Zverev fell in the second round to Danish teenager Holger Rune, Ruud, who was seeded second in Munich, had been the favourite.

After a 6-0, 6-2 triumph over Emil Ruusuvuori of Finland on Friday, the 18-year-old wildcard advanced to the semi-finals in Munich.

He will next face Oscar Otte of Germany, who advanced to his first ATP semi-final after defeating Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo 6-1, 7-6 (7/1).

Kecmanovic advanced to the final four after defeating fourth-seed Nikoloz Basilashvili, the defending champion in Munich, 7-6(5), 6-2.
