According to the Hindustan Times, a 13-year-old girl in India was sold by her mother to a 35-year-old man, who then allegedly raped her.
According to reports, the mother had to sell her daughter to pay off a debt of INR 500,000.
According to the police, the 13-year-old went to the police station with her uncle to register the complaint.
“The girl told us in her complaint that she was forcibly married to the man on April 20 at a village near Barmer, where she was raped,” said Superintendent of Police Deepak Bhargav.
“On April 24, she approached her uncle, and the two of them jointly filed a complaint,” he continued.
According to the authorities, the minor girl was forced to marry the accused through brokers in order to pay off the woman’s father’s debt. The girl’s father died four years ago, and the family was in financial distress.
The mother, on the other hand, denied the charges, claiming that the girl had been kidnapped by her uncle.
“The woman’s allegation does not appear to be real,” the SP said, adding that “the daughter herself is backing her uncle’s account and accusing rape.” “After a thorough examination, we will be able to provide further information.”
According to Anil Kumar, station house officer, Sadar police station, a case has been registered under sections 366A (procuration of a juvenile), 376(3) (rape of a lady under the age of 16), and 450 (home trespass) of the Indian Penal Code.
“After further examination, appropriate parts of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act will be introduced,” he added.
