Iga Swiatek, the world number one, has withdrawn from Madrid Open due to a shoulder issue.
The 20-year-old Polish won her fourth consecutive win at the Stuttgart Open on Saturday.
She was scheduled to begin her Madrid campaign on Thursday, but she stated, “My body needs a rest.”
Swiatek has indicated that she plans to compete in the Italian Open in May, followed by the French Open, where she is the favorite to win.
“After an intense few weeks and four consecutive championships, it’s time to take care of my arm, which has been exhausted since the Miami Open and I haven’t had the chance to handle it correctly,” she explained on Twitter.
“I need a break from playing so hard in order to properly treat my arm.”
She later told reporters in Madrid, “It’s not like we have some issue because everything is fine.”
We just thought it was the best thing for me to heal properly because I hadn’t had much time to rest after all of these competitions.
“Right now, I believe this is the greatest move for us to prepare for Rome and have my best form in Roland Garros.”
Swiatek, who won Roland Garros in 2020, is seeking her second Grand Slam championship in Paris.
She surpassed Australian Ashleigh Barty to become world number one last month, and she is now on a 23-match winning streak.
