At CinemaCon Warner Bros, Pictures unveiled a first look at Robbie in Barbie, as well as a release date for the film.
Margot Robbie lives in a Barbie universe!
Warner Bros. Pictures debuted a first-look image of the 31-year-old actress in the role of the famed Mattel doll at CinemaCon in Las Vegas this week, along with a release date for the film.
According to a tweet from the studio, Barbie, directed by Lady Bird director Greta Gerwig, will be released on July 21, 2023.
An accompanying image in the social media post showed Suicide Squad star Robbie rocking a retro ’60s vibe dressed in a blue and white polka-dotted headband and matching striped halter top.
She posed in front of a pink artificial stone backdrop, smiling as she leaned forward in a pink Chevrolet Corvette convertible.Robbie donned a beaded bracelet and her blonde hair was styled straight in a traditional American doll manner.
Ryan Gosling will play Ken, and the film will also feature Issa Rae, Will Ferrell, Kate McKinnon, Simu Liu, Michael Cera, and America Ferrera.
Robbie said, “People generally hear Barbie and think, ‘I know what that movie is going to be,’ and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they’re like, ‘Oh, well, maybe I don’t … ‘ ”
She added that thi role “comes with a lot of baggage,” given the doll’s historical controversies
“And a lot of nostalgic connections, but with that come a lot of exciting ways to attack it.”
Barbie was formerly intended to be played by Amy Schumer, who signed on to the film in December 2016.
However, she left the project in March 2017, claiming schedule issues as the reason.
But, as of last month, she claimed that her resignation was due to artistic differences.
She told, “They definitely didn’t want to do it the way I wanted to do it, the only way I was interested in doing it,”
Schumer recalled that studio sent her a pair of Manolo Blahnik shoes to congratulate her on the casting news, “The idea that that’s just what every woman must want, right there, I should have gone, ‘You’ve got the wrong gal.’ ”
Anne Hathaway was supposedly tied to the role after she left before Robbie took it.
The film is now under production in the United Kingdom.
