Brits may face a general election in 2023 as Boris Johnson strives to unify the Tory party. What would happen if a general election were held now?
Boris Johnson is embroiled in the partygate affair, with cross-party MPs voting to accept a Labour resolution to investigate the Prime Minister for allegedly willfully deceiving Parliament. Chief whips are preparing a vote of no confidence in the Tory leader following months of public and opposition party indignation, but insiders say Mr. Johnson may call a general election to halt them.
It appears as though a section of the Tory party has taken notice of the public outrage, as 46 letters of no confidence have been sent to Sir Graham Brady, chair of the Tory 1922 Committee.
This falls only eight votes shy of the 54 required to trigger a vote on a leadership contest.
Government insiders believe that if Mr. Johnson can hold on to his job until autumn, he will be able to push the general election up to 2023 rather than 2024.
The plan, if successful, would likely put an end to the insurrection, as it would leave insufficient time for a new leader to settle in before election day.
