A driver in the nation’s capital was recently motivated to share a video of a Good Samaritan after witnessing a random act of kindness.

After it was shared on Reddit on April 14th, tens of thousands were inspired by the event.

It may appear that the woman who was wet on the sidewalk began holding the umbrella over a covered baby stroller, but closer investigation reveals that it was someone in a wheelchair who was covering their head with a newspaper.

Not only did the driver go out of his way, but the woman also utilised her umbrella to shield the wheelchair user rather than herself.

For many watching the video, the happy scene brought back other memories. One viewer described a similar experience she had outside of Washington, DC.

“I was walking to school in the rain once while I was living in Falls Church (Virginia) and a lovely lady picked me up and drove me the rest of the way,” remarked commenter paranoidAndrea. “I was like, ‘I’m going to wet your car!'” She didn’t seem to mind.”

“Oh and just to add to her level of kindness I was big-time punky-looking, wearing mostly black and huge pants and all, the kind of kid some people love to judge negatively. A really good memory of mine.”

When FunctionalERP 92 was walking in a Brooklyn rainstorm, a motorist slowed down, dropped its window, and “chucked” an umbrella at him. “It was one of the nicest and most New York-ish ways of being helped out.”

“This happened to us in DC,” wrote ApotrAde. “Wife and I got stuck under a tree on the sidewalk with a stroller with 2 kids. A guy pulled over and threw an umbrella out the window, wont ever forget that.”

Because one of the viewers’ fathers worked for New Jersey Transit, he had a lot of umbrellas from the lost and found. “If it was raining when my dad would pick me up from school, he would slow down the car and hand out umbrellas to the kids who were walking home without them,” Evilgirlattack explains. “At the time, it was embarrassing, but now that I’m older, I think it’s fantastic.”

Even though he doesn’t have children of his own, SamSepiol-ER28 0652 keeps a car seat in his trunk. “I do it because I once stopped to help a mom and her baby who were caught in the rain, but she couldn’t go with me since she didn’t have a car seat (she only had a stroller).” They were allowed to wait in my car with me.”

“Now I know that if it happens again I can safely transport a baby or toddler if I ever see someone in a similar situation.”
