Seized: a record-breaking 2 tonnes of cocaine, with a street value of over $67 million.

Officials in Ivory Coast say they have seized over 2 tonnes of pure cocaine worth around $67 million. According to the ministry, the cocaine was seized from traffickers this month in Abidjan and San Pedro.

The statement gave few details but said nine people, Ivorians and foreigners, had been arrested.

A tonne of cocaine was seized in one of Abidjan’s northern districts just over a year ago.

Large cocaine seizures are becoming more common along the West African Atlantic Coast. The region is frequently used as a drug transit route from South America to Europe.

OECD estimates that 40 tonnes pass through the region annually.
