The Chicago Cubs ended a four-game losing streak by thrashing the Pittsburgh Pirates 21-0 on Saturday. Rivas hit a three-run home run to cap Chicago’s eight-run second. In the fourth and fifth inning, he singled.

Rivas is 5 for 11 over his two stints with the Cubs this year.

“He’s pretty in tune to what’s going on,” manager David Ross said.

The Cubs finished with 23 hits, their most since 1901. For the game, they scored 21 runs, their most since scoring 26 at Colorado on August 18, 1995, and their largest margin since beating the Boston Braves 24-2.

Seiya Suzuki, Willson Contreras, and Ian Happ each had three hits.

Each player that batted for the Cubs (7-8) collected at least one hit and scored at least one run.

Kyle Hendricks (1-1) got plenty of help, pitching seven innings of two-hit ball. Scott Effross finished the three-hitter with Sean Newcomb pitching the eighth.

“It was easy to pitch to contact,” Hendricks said.

The Pirates (7-8) have lost four straight. It was the Pirates’ worst loss since May 25, 1954, when they lost to the New York Giants.

In two innings, Zach Thompson (0-2)  hit  nine runs, four earned.
