Every year on April 23rd, World Book and Copyright Day are observed to honour the great works of authors worldwide.
UNESCO designated the day to encourage reading, writing, translation, publishing, and copyright.
World Book Day is observed in over 100 countries.
History and Significance
“Books are a person’s best companions,” they say. UNESCO established World Book Day on April 23, 1995, to promote literacy and encourage young people to read.
The date is significant since it marks the deaths of two of the world’s finest writers, William Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega.
It also commemorates the deaths of authors such as Josep Pla and Maurice Druon.
UNESCO wants more children from all circumstances to establish a lifelong habit of reading for enjoyment and benefit from the event’s increased life chances.
2022 Theme
The theme for World Book Day 2022 is ‘Read…So you never feel alone.’
