According to People on Friday, April 22, Justin Bieber and Dan + Shay are facing a copyright infringement lawsuit over their Grammy-winning smash song 10,000 Hours.
International Manufacturing Concepts, Melomega Music, and Sound Gems sued Bieber and Dan Syers and Shay Mooney, a country music duo, on Thursday, according to documents obtained by the site.
The lawsuit says that Bieber, Syers, and Mooney “stole the fundamental component” of their song, including the chorus, verse, and hook, from The First Time Baby Is a Holiday, a song written by Palmer Rakes and Frank Fioravanti in 1983.
It further notes that Rakes and Fioravanti’s song was not released until 2014, more than five years before Bieber and Dan + Shay’s 10,000 Hours, which is said to have “unmistakable parallels.”
The firms suing the pop and country musicians claim ownership of the tune and are seeking credits, as well as monetary damages, legal fees, and statutory penalties.
Representatives for Justin Bieber and Dan + Shay have yet to comment on the case.
