France’s Le Pen affirms ban on Muslim headscarves in public

Marine Le Pen, France’s presidential contender, reiterated her intention to outlaw the Muslim headscarf in public if elected.

The remarks occurred during a presidential debate with President Emmanuel Macron, who warned that the move would risk France devolving into a “civil war.”

French President Emmanuel Macron has warned that his far-right opponent Marine Le Pen risks inciting a “civil war” in the European country if she is elected and implements her promises to prohibit Muslim headscarves in public.

On Wednesday, during a televised presidential debate, Le Pen stated that she stood by her contentious proposal to outlaw the headscarf, which she described as an “Islamist-imposed uniform,” but added that she was not “fighting against Islam.”

Macron retorted, “You are going to cause a civil war”.

“I say this sincerely.”
