Governors DeSantis and Polis Dispute Disney and Twitter

DeSantis and Polis

Republican Ron DeSantis and Democrat Jared Polis, the governors of Florida and Colorado, respectively, are two of the most pro-crypto politicians in the country—and are being discussed as possible presidential contenders in 2024.

That is why it is noteworthy that the two engaged in a Twitter battle on Tuesday. It began when DeSantis, who recently asked for Florida to accept Bitcoin tax payments, indicated that he may seek to penalize Twitter’s board of directors for obstructing Elon Musk’s acquisition bid.

“We’re gonna be looking at ways the state of Florida potentially can be holding these Twitter board of directors accountable for breaching their fiduciary duty,” wrote the governor.

Legal analysts have scoffed at the concept that the state has a case against Twitter, implying that DeSantis’ threat is intended to bolster his standing among conservatives who believe the platform is biased against them.

His attack on Twitter comes on the heels of the governor ranting against Disney for promoting a “woke” agenda and calling for a special legislative session to withdraw some privileges enjoyed by the company’s Florida theme park.

All of this prompted Colorado Representative Polis — who attends Ethereum’s annual convention in Denver and once erected a Bitcoin ATM on Capitol Hill — to begin taunting DeSantis on Twitter. He dubbed DeSantis an “authoritarian socialist” on Tuesday for his heavy-handed attempts to regulate how private enterprises conduct business.

Polis proposed that Colorado accept both Twitter and Disney, assuring them that the state would not press them for political concessions. He then quipped that he would offer Mickey and Minnie Mouse a safe harbor.

Twitter and Disney have both invested in cryptocurrency in recent years. Naturally, Twitter has welcomed Bitcoin payments and NFTs, while Disney has dubbed the Metaverse the “next great frontier of storytelling.”
