Following a weekend of violence surrounding a holy site, five European countries called for an end to the clashes in a joint statement issued after an emergency UN Security Council session. Despite having called the meeting, the UAE and China did not sign the statement.
“The violence must end now. Preventing more civilian deaths must be a priority “Ireland, France, Estonia, Norway, and Albania said this. “The holy sites’ status quo must be respected.”
The meeting comes after several days of violence in and around Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, also known as the Temple Mount by Jews, in which 170 people were injured over the weekend, according to reports.
The five European countries condemned “all acts of terrorism” and rocket fire Monday from the Gaza Strip into southern Israel.
