Russia removes diplomats from Belgium and Netherlands

The Russian foreign ministry stated Tuesday that Russia has removed diplomats from the Netherlands and Belgium.

The envoys were called to the ministry and informed they had two weeks to leave Russia. The Belgian foreign ministry reported that 15 Dutch diplomats have been deemed persona non grata and 12 Belgian diplomats have been removed.

The expulsion affects more than two-thirds of Belgium’s diplomatic personnel in Russia. However, the Belgian embassy continues to operate, albeit with restricted capacity. According to a representative for Belgium’s foreign ministry, Belgian diplomats have always adhered to their diplomatic obligations under the Vienna Convention, in contrast to the Russian diplomats removed from the country last month. The foreign ministry stated in a statement that it “regretted” the move, which it said further isolated Russia diplomatically.

Luxembourg’s ambassador to Russia was also called to the foreign ministry after the Grand Duchy’s recent expulsion of a Russian diplomat. One diplomatic employee from Luxembourg has been deemed persona non grata but has not yet been expelled.

Dutch Foreign Affairs Minister Wopke Hoekstra stated in a news statement that The Hague “regretted” Russia’s decision, but noted that such a move was expected.

Moscow also withdrew diplomats from the EU mission to Russia earlier this month.

Moscow’s actions are reprisal for the EU’s coordinated expulsion of Russian diplomats at the end of March.
