During a 90-minute video call on Tuesday, the United States and other allies vowed to send artillery, anti-tank, and air defence aid to the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv.
Ukraine says it needs the weapons to defend itself against a new Russian offensive in the east. The “battle for the Donbas” has begun, according to Ukraine’s leader Volodymyr Zelensky.
“This will be an artillery conflict,” UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said after the summit.
“They [Ukraine] need support with more artillery, that is what we will be giving them.”
Joe Biden confirmed that the United States would also be sending Ukraine more artillery – heavy guns used in land warfare – during a press conference in New Hampshire.
In Berlin, Chancellor Olaf Scholz said Germany was providing finance to enable Ukraine to buy anti-tank weapons and ammunition from German arms manufacturers.
“The goal is to strengthen the Ukrainian military to repel Russian attacks,” he said. Defensive damage to Ukrainian tanks and armoured vehicles will be repaired by the Czech Republic,
