The recent TV drama based on the life of Teesside canoe fraudster John Darwin is hooking screens.
The story have resemblance to Teessiders as his now infamous vanishing happened off the coast of Seaton Carew near Hartlepool. In this rama Eddie Marsan is playing role of Darwin, and shoot is around Teesside, locations also includes Seaton beach and Middlesbrough town event. Here is he whole situation in 21st March, 2002: John Darwin, went missing after paddling his canoe out to sea off the coast of Seaton Carew which is near Hartlepool where he and Anne, owned two large houses.
On March 21st, 2002: A major search started which involved five RNLI lifeboats, two coastguard rescue teams from Hartlepool and Redcar. The police plane with heat-seeking equipment, an RAF helicopter and many teams of police officers after Darwin was reported missing when he failed to turn up for work at Holme House Prison, Stockton, “he worked as a prison officer.”
On March 22, 2002: The shell of Darwin’s red canoe was found, the destroyed boat was discovered at North Gare near a spot called as the Blue Lagoon by the mouth of the River Tees.
On April , 2003, An open verdict recorded at an investigation into Darwin’s death, after that Anne Darwin received pensions, insurance and benefits claims after John’s ‘death’ but acually he lived secretly next door to her in a house linked by a secret passageway.
On November 2004. John applied for a passport where he false name John Jones, which belonged to a dead month-old baby. He then travelled easily in and out of Britain undetected.
But during July 2006, the couple flew to Panama where they were photographed by a Panamanian property agent and on October 2007 Anne Darwin sold their house in Seaton Carew and bought an apartment in Panama City, Panama. This became some sort of suspicious. After that in December 1, 2007, A man walked into a London police station and claimed he was John Darwin. He told police officers that he had zero memory of the last five years. He was able to give complete biodata of himself but claimed he did not know where he had been.
And on December 2, 2007, John and Anne’s sons, Mark and Anthony, were called to an “emotional reunion” with their father at the police station off Regent Street.
On December 4, 2007, his sons announced that his father couldn’t remember anything since 2000. Anne was traced to an apartment in Panama City and told reporters she was thrilled her husband was alive.
But their photograph captured in estate agent’s office revealed their fraud and then afte so much hustle on December 5, Mrs Darwin admitted she knew her husband was alive after she was shown the photograph of the couple in Panama in 2006, she admitted the couple deceived their two sons.
Their confession leads them toward punishment and on December 8, Mr Darwin was charged with making an untrue statement to procure a passport and obtaining a money transfer by deception in relation to a life insurance policy and Mrs Darwin did not returned to Britain and was believed to be in Florida.
But soon on December , Anne Darwin returned to the UK from Atlanta in the USA and she was arrested at Manchester Airport by police.
After this whole case on 2021 got their story and ITV1 started filming scenes for a new drama based on the fraud called The Thief, His Wife and The Canoe.
