Punjab Assembly elects Hamza Shehbaz as new CM

Punjab Assembly (PA) on Saturday elected PML-N leader Hamza Shehbaz as the new chief minister (CM).

Hamza Shehbaz took 197 votes to become 21st CM of Punjab, the most populous province of Pakistan.

After scenes of uproar and mayhem in the assembly, the voting process began around 6pm and the session was convened by Deputy Speaker Dost Muhammad Mazari.

PTI and PML-Q boycotted the voting process due to violence in the assembly which made Hamza’s victory obvious.

In line with the Lahore High Court (LHC) directives, PA was to elect the new Leader of the House today. In this regard, a meeting of the PA was convened by Deputy Speaker Dost Mohammad Mazari.

As the political temperature rose ahead of the voting process, strict security arrangements were taken in the assembly to deal with any untoward situation.

Chief Ministerial candidate, Pervaiz Elahi who was contesting against Hamza Shehbaz, while talking to the media maintained that he was not the custodian of the assembly but a candidate to run for the slot of CM.

“We strive for transparent election, but the intentions seem unfair”, he added. “Time will prove whether the deputy speaker was honest or not.”

On the other hand, the deputy speaker Mazari maintained that he would conduct the session as per the directives of LHC and in line with the rules.

It is pertinent to mention here, Punjab Assembly has a total of 371 members and a minimum of 186 votes are required to gain the slot.
